Winter Car Prep Tips

It’s no secret that the holiday season – as much as we love it – can bring some stressors into our lives. Fortunately, we have put together this list of winter car prep tips below so that your vehicle is not one of them.

Check your battery

As the winter months approach, have your car battery tested and inspect the battery cables and terminals for signs of wear and tear. Colder temperatures can make it more difficult for your vehicle to start, so you want to ensure that your battery is in good shape.

Check your tire pressure

When the temperatures drop, so does your tire pressure, so it’s important to check your tire pressure more frequently during the winter months. Improper tire pressure can decrease your traction, which is especially dangerous when the roads are slippery and icy. Not only that, but improper tire inflation can also hurt your gas mileage.

Consider upgrading your tires

If you live in a location with severe winters, you may want to consider upgrading to winter tires, which provide greater control, improved grip, and shorter stopping distances.

Have your brakes checked regularly

Brake performance can be compromised by a buildup of rust from icy and wet road conditions, so it’s not a bad idea to bring your car in for regular brake inspections during the winter months.

Check your heater

Whether you have a commute or are running errands, you don’t want to be driving around in the winter without heat. Before it starts to get cold, check to see that your heating system is functioning properly.

Replace wiper blades and fluids

Your visibility can be greatly reduced on the road due to thick snowfall, salt, and other debris. To counteract this, replace your current wiper blades with some heavy-duty blades and get some freeze-resistant wiper fluid.

Monitor your coolant levels

The coolant in your vehicle’s radiator plays an integral role in keeping the engine running smoothly, so be sure to keep a close eye on your coolant levels. If you need a top off, you can purchase coolant from our parts center. Consult your owner’s manual for the recommended coolant for your make and model.

Get an oil change

Engine oil is also a critical component in keeping your vehicle running smoothly, but cold temperatures can cause it to thicken. That said, it’s a good idea to schedule an oil change at the beginning of the winter season.

Keep your gas tank filled or at least half full

When you leave your gas tank empty, condensation occurs and causes water droplets to build up in the fuel. Not only can this moisture lead to corrosion of your engine, but it can also freeze in the fuel lines and prevent your car from starting.
